Lowestoft – Large Pipe movements – updated information

Associated British Ports have issued the following notice to mariners (No. 25 2017):

LOWESTOFT – TRANSITS AND MOORING ARRANGEMENTS OF LARGE SEMI SUBMERGED PIPES

Mariners and Port Users are advised that the semi submerged pipes referenced in NTM No.23, have now all been towed in to Lowestoft. All eleven sections of pipe are now moored on North Quay. The pipes and the working area required for them, occupy the entire area on North Quay berths 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, (between approx. positions: 52° 28.49’N, 01° 44.03’E, and 52° 28.43’N, 01° 44.37’E). The moored pipe area extends up to 30m from the face of the quay. Numerous work boats and tugs are also moored or working in this area for maintenance or inspection requirements. This will include diving activities.

During the hours of darkness the pipes are marked by floodlights from the supporting vessels and from the quays. In addition 3 x yellow flash special mark buoys will be positioned close to the East and West extremities, and central position of the moored pipes.

During daylight hours pipes may be moved or repositioned by tugs and work boats. Please check with Port control on VHF 14 for an update on such activities before transiting the area.

Vessels are also requested to pass moored pipes at a good distance and at slow speed, especially when maintenance work or diving activities are taking place.

The duration of these operations is not yet known but is expected to last for several weeks. Further notification will be provided when works are completed, or if there are any significant changes to the moored areas or operational requirements.

NTM No.23 is hereby cancelled.

Please contact Lowestoft Port Control, VHF Ch14, or Tel. 01502 572286, if further information is required.

Lowestoft Inner Harbour – Wreck “Aisha”

Mariners and Port Users are advised of a change in the condition of sunken vessel ‘Welsh Conquest (Ex Aisha)’, in position 52° 28.60’N, 001° 43.225’E, (alongside

Harbour Road Jetty).

The vessel appears to have moved so that the stern of the vessel now encroaches into the Northern edge of the main navigational channel. The vessel’s upper housing has also started to break apart, and the yellow flash light is no longer on station.

A more thorough assessment of the wreck is scheduled to determine actions and marking requirements.

All vessels are requested to afford the wreck as much room as possible, and pass at slow speed. Mariners are also requested to be alert to the potential for floating debris in the vicinity of the wreck. Please report any such debris to Port Control, VHF Ch14.

Further information will be promulgated once available.

Please contact Lowestoft Port Control, VHF Ch14, or Tel. 01502 572286, if further information is required.
