Swing Bridges – update

We are advised that the current (24 July 2019) status is:

Reedham Bridge is unable to swing due to the heat.

Somerleyton Bridge is unable to swing due to the heat.

Mutford swing bridge is now operating again.

The first two bridges were both built in 1906 and are effectively at “end of life”. Network Rail have carried out engineering studies and consultations which recently concluded that replacement opening structures are the preferred long term maintenance option. However special funding is required, which Network Rail intend to apply for next March.

Last year we asked for evidence of the effect of bridge closures and ask that as many events are reported as possible.  In order to support the case for the special funding for replacement bridges, please can you advise any delays you have experienced waiting for the Reedham and Somerleyton swing bridges to open to the river. Did the delay cause you to miss appointments, miss events, miss the tide, or incur other costs? All events considered, with summer 2019 most relevant.  Please send details of any problems as set out below to swingbridges@thegreenbook.org.uk

Broadland Youth Regatta 2019

Hickling Broad Sailing Club is hosting the BYR on Saturday 31 August 2019, at Hickling Broad. The regatta is open to any youth or junior member of an NSBA affiliated club or organisation, who is under 19 years of age on the day of the event. The regatta is free to enter. We will be using a new team scoring system this year, and Sailwave. Each team’s best scores will be used. The number of boats to be included in the teams score, X, will be decided after the entries are received, in the week before the event. Teams with more boats than X will have the less successful sailor’s results discarded, and teams with fewer than X boats will have all their results count. There are good reasons to send your largest team, in line with the ethos of the Youth Regatta! A full explanation will be given in the Sailing Instructions.
HSBC will be forwarding the Notice of Race and entry forms to your club secretary and they will also be available on www.hicklingbroad.com. All completed Entry Forms, should be emailed to byr@hicklingbroad.com by Friday 23 August please.
This year NSBA will be introducing free Cadet membership for all sailors participating in the Youth Regatta. More details to follow.
