The first two bridges were both built in 1906 and are effectively at “end of life”. Network Rail have carried out engineering studies and consultations which recently concluded that replacement opening structures are the preferred long term maintenance option. However special funding is required, which Network Rail intended to apply for but the prognosis of success was so poor that NWR have reverted to a maintenance programme; this will run through the next three winters 2020/23.
Last year we asked for evidence of the effect of bridge closures and asked that as many events are reported as possible. In order to support the case for the special funding for replacement bridges; responses were not usefully forthcoming.
Please can you advise any delays you have experienced waiting for the Reedham and Somerleyton swing bridges to open to the river. Did the delay cause you to miss appointments, miss events, miss the tide, or incur other costs? All events considered. Please send details of any problems as set out below to swingbridges@thegreenbook.org.uk

Hickling Broad Sailing Club hosted the BYR on Saturday 31 August 2019, at Hickling Broad.
This annual regatta is open to any youth or junior member of an NSBA affiliated club or organisation, who is under 19 years of age on the day of the event. The regatta is free to enter. We used a new team scoring system this year, and Sailwave. Each team’s best scores were used. The number of boats to be included in the teams score, X, to be decided after the entries were received, in the week before the event. Teams with more boats than X had the less successful sailor’s results discarded, and teams with fewer than X boats had all their results count. There were good reasons for clubs sending their largest team, in line with the ethos of the Youth Regatta! A full explanation was given in the Sailing Instructions.
HSBC forwarded the Notice of Race and entry forms to member-club secretaries and they remain available for Reference on www.hicklingbroad.com.
This year NSBA introduced free Cadet membership for all sailors participating in the Youth Regatta. If as a participant you missed out on this please contact the NSBA Secretary.
